DPMS off mode reboots

I've just installed new RAM (one 512 stick; i took out the old one). Since then my computer spontaneously reboots. I had another stick in before with it, but now I only have the 512. Now the pc reboots after I enter in my password in the login screen. Right before any reboot, a blue box saying "DPMS off mode" comes up and disappears... then the entire system reboots.
I've figured out what DPMS is ...despite what DPMS does, why does it end up rebooting the entire pc, and how do you fix it? :)
I happen to be using a desktop with a viewsonic monitor and running windows xp

That message is produced by the monitor, not the computer. It is the result of the computer re-booting and resetting the video card. Its triggered by the absence of any synchronisation signals from the video card. Nothing really to do with the memory.
You will likely get the same message if you disconnect the monitor cable from the video card.
