I have recently switched from IE to Firefox and apparently just in time for the new FF3. I absolutely love it and i am digging all the cool add-ons, bookmarking, autocompletion etc. however my one complaint would be when i download something, i have to save the exe. file, then run a setup from the saved exe. file on my desktop. for instance if i get guitar tabs from ultimate-guitar.com, it will go straight to my desktop instead of being able to designate the folder i want it to go to like in IE. Also if I'm downloading a freeware program, say limewire, i have to save the file the will setup limewire (LimeWireWin, File Type: Application), then run that file from my desktop, then go back and delete it, when i'd rather run it from the website like i could in IE. any help on a way to configure these so i dont have to do all that stuff and be more like IE in that respect?

i don't need no stinking 8 key

In Firefox 3.0 go to Tools / Options select Main / Downloads. Then browse to the folder that you save your downloads to...

thank you, that does fix my problems with downloading tabs and midis and what not, however what about .exe files, like in the limewire example. do i have to save those files to my computer, or can i run them straight from the internet, like in IE?

Save the .exe files to your computer, do not run them from the net as you can run into problems doing it that way.

Forget Limewire it's a malware magnet...

thats not an answer to my question, i want it to run .exe files from the net, like IE, and i never had a problem. and i was only using limewire as an example, i do not intend on downloading it and its irrelevant, so if anyone could tell me what i want i would appreciate it.

You have your answer, though it's not the one you wanted. The reason FF and Mozilla browsers don't allow EXE files to be run directly is that it's a major security breach. IE is full of such holes - it's why IE users are likely to get malware of all types installed without their knowledge.

I spend more time than I can afford removing pop-up adware and some really nasty malware from friends' and clients' computers, and converting them to Firefox.

If you wnat to be able to run files directly, then go back to using IE, and accept the risks.

Apart from that, if I download software, I WANT to store it somewhere so I can reinstall it if problems arise. Foe example, if there is a major bug in a new release, I'll have the older release to fall back on.
