FTP = File Transfer Protocol. It's used to transfer files (upload & download) over a network or the internet. You don't need any special software to use it. I'm not exactly sure what it is you're trying to do?

You only need Internet Explorer to download from ftp servers. You need software if you want to serve. I use CerberusFTP.com.

It works like windows explorer kinda. Right click a file and choose "Copy to Folder" then direct it somewhere on your harddrive. Here is a fun one at MS:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/

Choose View - Details.
Well, fun too look at hundreds of files anyway.

Best

Downloading using FTP is simply a faster method for downloading versus using HTTP.

HTTP uses error checking for each packet sent whereas FTP does not.

As a result, downloading via FTP can result in checksum errors when attempting to open one of the files whereas it is less likely when downloaded via HTTP.

Internet Explorer 5x and higher has a FTP client built into it so that you can upload to a FTP server using it. IE's FTP is slower than other third party FTP client softwares. (It is what I use to upload files to my personal webspace as it is fast enough.)
