how come a bandwith speed test shows 297 kilobites per second but a download is only 40 tops?

The bandwidth speed test is showing 297 kilobits, which is equal to 37.125 kilobytes.

bIts and bYtes aren“t the same thing.

One byte contains 8 bits.
So in your case 297 kilobits divided by 8 gives you roughtly 37 kilobytes...like Sci-Guy says.
