Comment:

Just got a new hp dv9000 notebook that came with Vista. Looking to downgrade to XP. XP install can't detect the hard drives, and from what I've read, I have to disable the SATA. However the BIOS does not provide an option for this! Any advice?

What makes you think you need to disable SATA in bios? How is the instal disk supposed to write to the drive if it is disabled in bios?

The usual method of installing XP on a system with SATA drive is to insert the XP disk. Wait til it askes for third party drivers and press F6. This is where the SATA drivers are loaded so that the rest of the instal process can continue. you may have a chipset driver disk from HP that contains the needed files. If not then you may need to contact HP support to obtain the necessary drivers.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

You will need to download the SATA driver for XP on a CD, or floppy uncompressed. I believe that laptop uses the ICH7M intel correct? Either 945, or 965 chipset?

Verify there are drivers available for ALL hardware. This has been a problem for many here in the past.

I suggest that you download ALL needed drivers and store on a CD prior to attampting to install WinXP. HD sound driver and NIC have been especially problematic
