DOS programs won't run

I've recently tried to run an old DOS Budgeting program on my XP computer. This is the first dos program I've tried to run in quite some time, and it doesn't seem to be working. I get an error message: "Attempt to Access Invalid Address"
XP is based on NT4/OS2 therefore it is unlike W9x where it is a GUI on top of the 16bit DOS operating system. It was a 32bit fully intergrated operating system from day one 17 years ago.
