Ok,
My Father In Law works from home as a design engineer and has a PC that runs programs that will only work in a DOS enviroment. The PC is quite old too with a P200 and 64MB ram.
So my problem is that his work requires him now to run a router that will only work on 98 SE, ME or XP..
The PC is too old to run ME or XP as far as i know so the 2 questions I have are1.) Would an upgrade from 98 to 98 SE still offer the same compatability with DOS
2.) If a new system were purchased, is it possible to
a.) run DOS from XP
b.) upgrade from 98 to XP with only 2.5GB of spare hd spaceAny other suggestions on how I can transfer the DOS reliant programs to a PC running XP
Thanks in advance

1.) Would an upgrade from 98 to 98 SE still offer the same compatability with DOS
Yes.
2.) If a new system were purchased, is it possible to
a.) run DOS from XP
b.) upgrade from 98 to XP with only 2.5GB of spare hd spaceNo to both

Win XP has NO facilities for DOS support but it seems to have DOS emulation according to this thread.

First of all many (not all) DOS applications run fine under XP that is an NT kernel system but has a built in powerfull emulator NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) to retain compatibility with legacy software.
The drawback of NTVDM is the high tweaking it requires in some case to achieve the wished target.
Another way to run safely DOS applications is to install under Windows XP Pro the Microsoft VirtualPC emulator that sets up a full virtual PC inside the Windows environment.
That is an extra cost however; there are other emulators, but I think VirtualPC is the easiest one for the common user.

1.) Would an upgrade from 98 to 98 SE still offer the same compatability with DOS
Yes
2.) If a new system were purchased, is it possible to
a.) run DOS from XPXP does not have DOS. It has command prompt. It doe not allow direct access to the hardware. It does run some DOS-like commands.
b.) upgrade from 98 to XP with only 2.5GB of spare hd space
Not worth your time
Any other suggestions on how I can transfer the DOS reliant programs to a PC running XP
May or may not work. Keep what you've got. The emulators MAY work, but some things just can't be done.
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
