DOS packet drivers under XP??

I was wondering if anyone out there has tried to get DOS packet drivers working under the command prompt??
I tried and failed to get a driver to load for an NE2000 clone.
What I'm trying to do is get some of my old DOS based networking software up and running under XP, and this software uses a packet driver to talk to the ethernet card, and yes I'm trying this on a second ethernet card that XP doesn't know about.
So has anyone had any sucess getting a packet driver loaded for a card under the XP command prompt??
If not, I guess I'll have to live with a sucky SLIP link. But I'd really like to get ethernet working...
