Comment: Help please! Dad uses an old 3.11 computer to run his business programs. He had this program written specifically for his business so it does many things like invoicing, billing, reports, etc. I think he has all the floppies that came with the program. The problem is that he now wants all this on his new computer that runs XP. How do we do this? The OP was not an icon on the 3.11 desktop so I am not sure what needs to be done. TIA, Maura

Reply: (edit)XP has no DOS. It has a DOS emulator that will run some DOS programmes. It depends on how they were written. It also has a compatibility mode that fixes some DOS programmes to run under XP, but there is no guarantee. The only thing you can do is to install them and try. If the DOS programme was written using standard DOS system calls, then it probably will work. If the programme tries to access and hardware directly, like a lot of games do, then it will not work. What do you mean by the OP was not an icon? Stuart

Reply: (edit)Hallo, If all fails under XP, try to install VMWare. This is a virtual machine where you can install OS from Win3.1 within XP.

Reply: (edit)What do you mean by the OP was not an icon? What I am trying to say is that I guess the program runs in Dos. I don't think Dad goes into Windows to run it. I'll try it and see if it runs. I will check into VMWare also. Thanks!
