I'm looking for a DOS-emulator for under XP. XP is a great OS, but I still like to play some very old DOS games (like AV), and I've tried all compatability options, but it still doesn't work. So does anybody know a (free) DOS-emulator? Thanks in advance!

What won't work under XP DOS?

If it is the sound that you are having problems with there is a program called VDMSound which will emulate a sound card in XP Dos. I haven't got the URL at the mo, so just type in VDMSound on a search engine.

If it isn't the sound, then what other problems are you having with XP DOS?

Well, when I try to start AV (you surely know it, Arcade Volley, 2 dudes with only a head and legs playing Volley :-D ) I get an error, no matter what compatability options I've disabled. The error is:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
========================================
%path%\AV\AV.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
Cs:c000 IP:003a OP:ff ff f2 62 90 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Oh, and %path% IS an ms-dos path! Since this error didn't occur in Win98, I've figured it must be XP's DOS.... And if that's so, I need a DOS-emulator....

Is your drive NTFS or FAT32?

If FAT32 use a win95/98 dos bootdisk, put on it your sound card drivers and the himem.sys file and you should be able to play your DOS games.

Alternatively you can get Bochs (free) or VMWare (commercial), however neither of these emulators are excellent, and DOS support may be limited.

Still using FAT32. And indeed, I know a boot disk in win98 works this way, but I want to play these games while downloading etc. under windows. I'll check these emulators, tnx!
