You can create a shorcut to the programs on the desktop, right click on them and set the properties for dos compatiblity as well.

the command on windows XP is NOT DOS. Does anyone know where to get an emulator for DOS on windows XP. I need DOS DBASE and other programs that windows XP does not handle very nicely.

Try VDSM at http://ntvdm.cjb.net/
Its not perfect and some programs need the sound disabling.But it does work
Very easy to use as well.Install it then right click on the dos program you want to run and theres "Run with VDSM" in the menu
