Try disconnecting one of them at a time. To see if one of them is bad and killing the other one.

Do you mean that there is no icon in Windows Explorer?
Check the Event Viewer for details. Also, look in the device manager to see if they are recognized there.

If you are comfortable editing the registry:
Create a Restore point and back up the registry.Open regedit.
Look for;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\SetControlClass.
Key name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data:[Delete all value data from upper and lower filters]
Note-Do not delete the key or the multi-string values. Delete only the data values.
The keys may be in more than 1 place. You will have to search for them.

Exit regedit and reboot.

If you just installed a program or update, try uninstalling it.
If you said "previous they were D and E units" that means that most likely they don't conflict each other, Windows and a program might not like the drive.

Goto the System tool/ Disk Management.
What does the system tell you about your drive are they listed there>

Have you checked the Control Panel /Hardware to see if there are any problems there?
