Specs: Windows XP
my computer will not get past the Windows XP screen. It will say, We apologize for the inconvenience windows did not start up properly... I have tried starting regularly and starting from the last best known configuration, but it still wont go past that. I am not sure what the safe mode does. Is there anything I can do?

Safe mode starts windows with the absolute minimum running. It is useful if hardware drivers or software compatibility is preventing proper starting. It also works great for antivirus scanning if you suspect a stubborn infection is your issue. Another Important feature is that you can access System Restore from it and revert back to a previous point when it was running properly (try this one).
Any terms you do not understand, just Google them.
Any more help, post back system specs and what you tried, as well when all of this started, and any added hardware or software recently.

Good advice and I second the System Restore suggestion.

Fingers, that's an ace idea with the safe mode virus scan, I never thought of doing that! Hah. Cheers.. I might just try it, just incase, you never know. ;)
