Subject: Don't have permission to delete! (admin)
Comment:

I have a VERY annoying problem!

2 times after I've re-installed XP some directories in various places (like my WHOLE mp3 directory) and the whole download-catalout.. and some movies too..

If I try to go in to the directory I get:
X:\dir is not accessible.
Access is denied.

And If I try to delete a folder I get:
Cannot remove folder : Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

I has always been logged in as Administrator, nothing else.. and NOBODY is using these damn files!!! Can't delete them in safe mode either! They are just laying there looking dumb (and taking about 20 gigs of my hd space!!!)

So if anyone knows a way to either FORCE DELETE them or how to gain access (even though I'm already is logged in as an admin)

I would say that this is some damn bug in XP - because I haven't shared any of these folders or something.. They have ONLY appeared after re-installing XP.

Any advice, please??

// Martin

Using NTFS? Won't work... If somebody doesn't got any sort of NTFS for DOS or so that is free? Then it would work.. I hope..

right click on the offending folder, click properties, go to "security", click add, and add your username in there, for example
COMPUTERNAME\Administrator
then makesure you tick boxes to give you full access.. apply/ok it and volia you may delete :-)

You have to boot into safe mode to access the Security features in XP Home. Then you can follow the steps RJ outlined.

I had the same problem. I suspect after a re-install, you are no longer the administrator for the directories created during the prior installation of XP. I eventully got frustrated and reformated my drive to get rid of those damn user directories.

I think force delete is either shift + delete or control + delete. Hope that helps.

If you are using NTFS on your PC go get a copy of NTFS4DOS from www.sysinternals.com
This will let you boot from a DOS floppy and delete your annoying files.

Also ask yourself if you REALLY need NTFS. For a home/personal PC it's not necessary and as you've discovered, it's not easy to get round niggling problems that you could solve in a minutes in DOS/FAT32

Even good old Norton Commander works in DOS on an XP machine, got me out of trouble several times.

I don't think you are AS the administrator.
You are part of it but just in case, check if administrator in registered as a popup name at logon screen. If no, put it in a shown here and reboot and try it.Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList \
Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name the new value Administrator
Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as it's Value data

Hi all,

I too had this same annoying problem and it seemed to go on forever. I tried every thing i could think of and every suggestion posted on various message boards.

Finally i came to one that seemed way to simple to work and when it did i almost started to cry because i had some huge divx files i had been trying to get rid of forever and not only that but every time my mouse got even any where near the file my cpu usage would shoot through the roof and wouldnt stop until I did a hard reboot!

Im not sure why this happens but it has some thing to do with windows media player.

Use windows media player to open the file you want to delete wait for it to load , then close out windows media player , then try to delete the file. I know it sounds crazy but it worked for me. On some files I had to repeat the process a couple of times but it worked.

Good luck, let me know if it works for you guys.

This message is to Tom ... although your response was the most basic, it did work. I tried everything ... damn near put my fist through the f@#*ing machine but I got it. I had to open WMP then open the file through there ... then go to the open window again and delete the file there ... kinda strage but it's the only way .. I've been through the recovery on the XP Pro CD and everything ... there was no way to get those gay files off .... but for some reason .. IT WERKED .. woohoo ... the HD was going crazy too .. had no idea why ... that's my question for anyone you knows it ... why the hell is this happening and why is there no fix on the windows site yet

Some process somewhere appears to be leaving a file-handle open to the file or folder you are attempting to modify (not closing it) - this untidy behaviour fools Windows into thinking the
object is still in use, when really it isn't. I have experienced the same strangeness under Windows 2000.

You may open a DOS window, and use that old classic "CHKDSK /X" on the volume (disk) where the offending files/folders reside (note the /X switch, which forces the volume to dismount, and ALL open file handles will be closed - you may then delete and modify to your heart's content).

Furthermore, i have read that the problem may stem from some incompatibility between NTFS and FAT32. Or it could be related to disk controllers, who knows eh. But i DO know that Microsoft generally only acknowledge problems they can actually fix!

Bit late posting, but hope this is of some use!

I'm using Morpheus too and I get the message "Access Denied" when I try to delete and move the files! When I try to execute them on Media Player, it warns me the file is beeing used! It happens only with some files (the same files that don't appear on Morpheus' My Media list). Quite strange, because the are on My Share Folder and wouldn't appear on My Media. I moved some MP3 files to My Shared Folder, and now, I can't execute them. I happens with any media file that is moved to my shared folder!
I don't think that Morpheus caused this problem for the other guys on this forum. But it caused for me! If anyone knows how to solved it, pleased mail me!

Good luck
William

Hi,

Same problem here. My Morpheus shared folder is the culprit. I had an XP crash last night and copied my stuff over to my other computer. Now I can't access the files "ONLY" in the morpheus folder. I tried the chkdsk /x and also modifying permissions in safe mode. It has to be a Morpheus related problem. Go try and find support on their site. It is a joke.

I hope someone can figure this out, I don't want to spend another week of my life downloading movies I already did!

Thanks.

Bryan

i have ben having the same problem and nothing anyone has said works has worked for me. it has to be morpheus becaus this is only hapening to files related to morpheus, i moved a file out of my shared folder in hopes of saving it only to have it do the samn damn thing in the folder i moved it to.
plz someone get ahold of those f---heads at morpheus and tell them that they need to have some f---ing support on their site!
i think this has to be a windows xp, morpheus compatibilty problem, but microsoft wont deal with a problem like this and the morpheus people are totaly worthless.

Yeah!! I found a fix. Right click on the annoying file at hand. Click on properties. Next click on the sharing tab. Put a check in the box that says "Share this folder over the network" then click apply. The error comes up. Click ok the check the "Share this folder over the network" box again and hit apply. You now have access to your folder. Any comments or donations just email me.

Woo-Hoo!!! You all just saved me a hell of a lot of frustration.

The sharing tab response (above) kills unwanted folders, and the forced delete kills unwanted programs.

(The DOS checkdisk fix didn't work.)

Trying to move files used by Morpheus was presumably the culprit here, too.

Tried everything here..no dice so far. :o(

Brief overview of my problem:
Morpheus My Shared Folder.... cannot move,
copy, delete, or shred anything that is in ANY sub-folder of the My Shared Folder.... (they all keep telling me that it cannot delete or move, or copy because
the file may be write protected, the disk full, or the file in use)
Loose files that are simply in the My Shared Folder I can do anything I want with..but if I put any of those files in one of the sub-folders (either move it or copy it) then that file is "locked" too.

Here's the most recent thing I tried:
" Put a check in the box that says "Share this folder over the network" then click apply."
I don't have that checkbox in WinXP Home Ed.? :o(

Please email if you have any ideas...this is making me Mental....
Many Thx

i found out a way for fixing this on XP HOME edition, i got frustrated with my MORPHEUS CRAP too, so i tried "Ecshafner's" answer above, but i found out XP HOME doesnt have the check box. i knew there had to be a way....if you have made a folder in my shared folder (the one that has your files Downloaded from morpheus) and it is locked, click on "properties" then "sharing". then click on "shared documents" and that should bring up a new window with your shared files on your computer. leave it open and open your shared folder, and simply drag the lock folder into the shared folder and you should have access...........!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't open the My Shared Folder at all (access denied, and I cannot change any attributes for it either), so I can't get to any of the sub-folders I created in the My Shared Folder. :o(
Windows Explorer won't open the My Shared Folder, Morpheus says I am "not sharing any files" and the properties of that folder say that it is empty and uses NO disk space, but I know it has almost a gig of mp3 files in it. :o(
Working on this problem over 12 hrs straight now, and I'm willing to try almost anything at this point. :o(

Hi folks,

I had this problem too ( I have since removed Morpheus from my Windows XP image ! )... but my problem was that I could not delete a "My Shared Files" folder - I too was getting the aformentioned "Access Denied", even when I IPL'd my system into Safe Mode!

I had tried everything on this forum, all to no avail - but after playing about for a while I found out one thing DID work...

I moved the offending folder to the root directory ( C:\ ) of my hard disc and I was able to delete it!

I hope this helps any of you other guys that got stuck like me!

Cheers, James ( who's no off to trawl the net to find an alternative to Morpheus that works properly on XP! :-)

James is right! That works Perfectly!
However!! *lol* Do NOT move the My Shared Folder back to it's original location (or to any other location, maybe?) after getting it unlocked or you're most likely going to have it locked up even tighter. I did. :o(

here's what happened:
The first day of my troubles with the MSF I moved it to the Desktop and it, and all it's files/sub-folders, were totally unlocked! I could manipulate the files in any way I chose! I was ecstatic! And TOO Optimistic. *lol*
I moved it back into the Morpheus folder after deleting a couple of things, and renaming a couple of things... figured I'd burn a CD later in the day and then delete all the files...
Bad move. :o( After moving it back I couldn't even OPEN the MSF, much less browse to it to burn a CD, or re-move the folder to unlock it. Access Denied!
here's how I fixed it--after two 12 hr days of frustration:

I had already gone in through Explorer and set the Morpheus folder, and all files/sub-folders inside it, to be shared on this machine...(though why I had to set it to be Shared on a machine where there is only ONE user acct. set up I have No Idea....)

But in desperation I was going back through all the Morpheus main program folder settings thinking "yeah...yep....did that...yep...set that..." and after verifying that the main Morpheus folder and all the sub-folders were SUPPOSED TO BE shared, I just idly right clicked on the trouble-making file--the My Shared Folder--and once more checked the Properties of it.
Again, it had reverted right back to Read Only. Couldn't open it, Explore it, delete it...NUTHIN.
So I went to the Security and Sharing item in the right click menu and found that My Shared Folder was NOT set to be shared on this computer even though I had set the parent folder (Morpheus) and all files/sub-folders of the parent folder to be shared!

So it IS a WinXP problem, after all! I've been blaming Morpheus, when all the time it was XP not changing the security/sharing attributes on sub-folders when, after it specifically asks you if you want it changed, you say "OK"

so, while I could SEE them, before anything else went wrong, I burned those confounded mp3's to CD, and DELETED them using Explorer. :D

Moral of the story: DO NOT BELIEVE XP WHEN IT TELLS YOU THAT IT'S CHANGED SETTINGS DOWN THROUGH THE WHOLE FOLDER TREE. Check each one manually. :o)

Thank you all so much for your help and patience.
Hope this info help/keeps someone else from making a boo-boo like I did. *lol*

I did everything said above. Nothing worked properly.
That is what I did: I moved MSF to the root directory, and I still couldn't play the files. It's interesting that I can delete them, but they don't go to Trash, just go...
Then I tried to move the folder back to it's original location, it worked, but some files couldn't be moved. This files are those that I moved to MSF manually. The ones that were downloaded with Morpheus are OK.. I can play, move, copy... It would happen the same thing with any files or folder that I move to Morpheus' MSF.
I think I'll delete them all, and download againg.. :-).

Ok, heres a combo that worked for me. Everytime i tried to move, delete, open anything in MSF (including MSF), I got the infamous "Access Denied" Error. Even trying to move the MSF folder to the root directory of C:\. I figured that all i had to do was close and EXIT morpheus (right click icon, close morpheus). WRONG!!! I finally figured out that morpheus doenst close the MSF or any other folder it has (after plater playing with the shared folder list). I decided to rename "My Shared Folder" to the actual name "MSF" (any name will do). Then i could safly copy to my root directory and viola! "Unlocked" files. I am so happy, over 15 simpsons full episodes saved. Now does anyone know how to get all the files from my HD out of the "My Media" list?
