OK - here's an interesting issue. I'm a hardware guy, not a networking guy, so I can't figure it out.
I have a laptop from work that I occassionally bring home and connect to my home network. My work laptop runs Win XP pro and is registered with my work's domain.
My home computer also runs XP Pro and is a member of my home workgroup, rather than a domain. My home PC has two printers hooked up to it locally. I have set both of those printers to be shared (using simple file sharing).
The problem involves printer sharing. I take my laptop home and login to the workstation admin account (not the account I use everyday, obviously) and I can add the printers. Everything's cool while I'm logged into the admin account (which is a local workstation account, rather than a domain account). I can use the printers on my home network no problem.
However, if I try logging into my normal user account on the laptop (which is a domain-based account), I cannot see the shared workgroup printers or print to them.
Since, I'm not a domain admin at work, I do not have the domain PW and do not want to register my work PC on my home workgroup, thus unregistering it from the domain, just so I can use the shared printers on my home network.
Is there a workaround for this? Basically, I want my normal domain-based user account to be able to see the workgroup printers when I am connected to my home network.
(Yes, I realize I could just use the admin account on the laptop when I'm at home, but my favorites and cookies and all my other personal settings are saved under my non-admin account.)

nope - that's not it. I'm not getting any printing errors because I can't see the printer at all when I'm logged into the domain-based, non-admin user account.
I have to be logged into a non-domain, workstation account on my laptop in order to see the printers.

I've encountered exactly the same issue with the laptops my son & daughter use at school and bring home in the evenings.
I tried to avoid the domain issues by creating local ID's that could be used with the home network, but they ended up being tied back to the school domain somehow.
I plan to try the admin route tonight.
When setting up a new user ID, how do you specify whether it is to be local to the PC or associated with a domain?

The trick here is to enable Simple File Sharing on the Domain computer. Go to the Control Panel, Folder Options and on the View tab, check the use simple file sharing box (probably the last one).

You should now be able to see your home computer. I was not able to use the computer name but was successful using the IP address. Good luck.
