Subject: Do I need to format for new comp?
OS: XP SP1 Home
CPU/Ram: Athlon 64/1 Gig PC3200
Comment:

Okay, I have a pretty old computer (800Mhz/P3, 394 Megs PC133 Ram, Geforce 2 GTS). About (2) weeks ago the hard drive died so I bought a new 80 gig, WD @7200 rpm (IDE) hard drive. I also bought Windows XP, SP1 Home. I have installed Windows XP with no problems and things are running well.

I have since decided to build a new computer and have ordered my new components (Athlon 64 3200+, 1 Gig Kingston PC3200, Sound blaster Augidy 2 Gamer, ASUS K8V Deluxe, ATI X800 Pro). My question is: Can I just install the hard drive from the old computer without having to format and install Windows again? I have not activated Windows yet.

Any help is appreciated.

you can not switch the hard drive from computer to computer... many times windows does not like the motherboard/compenent switching and fails to function.. a fresh install when hooked up to all of the new stuff.. the amd64 and so on.. will create finish your computer off nicely and by the way.. very very nice setup

I have successfully moved hard drives from one system to another many times. One secret to doing it correctly, is to remove all the drivers from the drive to let windows start with a clean slate. This means that you will have to install ALL the drivers after you boot up.
The way I do it is to boot into safe mode. Start regedit and delete the
Hkey_Local_Machine/Enum key
That will remove all the entries in the Device Manager. Reboot and start the tedious ptocess of installing all the drivers.

At that point it almost seems worth formatting the Windows partition and re-installing.

Thanks for the help.

A qualifier! I assumed that it was a win98 system on the hard drive, since you just purchased XP. I have had no luck at all when trying it a couple times with winXP.

No doubt! A clean install is much better if you don't have valuable data/programs to save.

Nah-I have everything saved from when I bought the new HD. Just thought I might be able to take a few short cuts. Plus I have all my other data on the other (2) partitions.

Thanks again.
