do i need pro 64 for my 64dual core

This should give you an idea of what improvements and issues would arise from going to x64.
Some linux OS are 64-bit too but I have no idea about those.
I run the 32-bit version on my 64-bit chip and I still find it blisteringly quick so the choice is yours.

I think the OS 'should' run faster, but it would only speed up 64 bit applications not 32 bit. I don't think there are many 64 bit applications around at this time.

The short answer is no. Because many 32-bit applications will not work with a 64-bit OS. I know for a fact you will have to update the drivers for every single hardware device you have just to get your computer running at optimal speed. While Windows XP 64 is leading the way for Microsoft to expand into the 64-bit realm, you really won't see 64-bit applications until Vista is released (Windows is expected to realease 64-bit only applications at that time too.) In short, there will be a time when 32-bit systems will be outdated, but it's not going to happen in the next year or two.
