Hi ,
Its a general question. its related to DNS. you should be knowing DNS. i know what it is and ow it works. But where is that DNS located. where is the server located to convert the domain name to IP address.

There isn't just one there are many. Every ISP maintains there own DNS. If it cannot find the required entry there, it looks on another DNS which is dependant on the top level suffix. i.e. .co.uk, .com, .edu etc.

All these DNS obtain their information from a central DNS located somewhere in the USA, its exact location a closely guarded secret.

So really all you need to know is the address of your ISPs DNS. All the others are queried automatically as required.

Thank you for all the information. Hi colt, thank you for the wonderful website which explains how the machine searches for the website.
And Staurt , thank you for the about the DNS server location. you said , its closely guarded location. Some how when i was searching on the net , i came across this info that the DNS main server is located somewhere in Virginia.
