I'm able to access the internet but when I go to check my gmail account or login to facebook it tells me "page cannot be displayed" and at the botton it reads "Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer" please advise what I should do.

Check the connection settings in the Internet Explorer options.
Take a look at the proxy settings.
You may also check the add-ons in Internet Explorer.
There are normally 4 add-ons needed to use Internet Explorer. All the others can be disabled (things like Messenger, Sun Java a.s.o.)
