I've noticed great variability between different WinXP system, in the period that hidden systray icons stay revealed when the chevron is clicked. Where can that be influenced ?

Right click on the Start button. Choose properties> taskbar> untick hide inactive icons. Locking or unlocking the taskbar may have an effect on the behavior.

To lock/unlock the taskbar right click a blank space on the taskbar. The option should appear.

Just to add to the above, if "Show Quick Launch" isn't ticked, I suggest you select it. And make sure to click APPLY when you're done.

My question relates to influencing the PERIOD for which the icons stay revealed. I KNOW it can range from under a second to several seconds.
