I went from windows 98 to xp and have no active desktop now. The main screen is a security warning in really small letters and i cant bring up the box to change screensavers

How about you re-state your question and give some exact details about your system, what you did and what your display is showing when you boot up.
Did you do an Upgrade instal? How much ram do you have? Did you back up your files before you started? Did you check your system for XP compatibility before you installed it?

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

you say you have 56 k of RAM. way too inadequate for XP. you need at least 128k.

and best to do a format and reinstall other than an upgrade as that you tend to inherit problems with the old OS.

right click the desktop and go to properties and its under there now instead of the active desktop option
