When I start "Display Properties" (Right click Desktop-Properties)the box pops up but all the tabs are missing. The only thing showing is the "Themes" section. Is there a way to fix this.

Maybe this:
Missing Tabs in Display Properties and No OpenGL Support After You Upgrade to Windows XPhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283751

Appreciate the reply, but I already saw that "fix". It really doesn't apply to me. This has nothing to do with an upgrade. Also I've searched this forum as well as others and tried all the fixes that might apply to my problem. Nothing works. I was hoping someone had come up with some new ideas. Thanks.

Hi
Check to see if you have any of the following entries in your registry
Hide display appearance tab in display properties
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Disabled
NoDispAppearancePage=dword:00000000
Enabled
NoDispAppearancePage=dword:00000001Hide background tab in display properties
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Disabled
NoDispBackgroundPage=dword:00000000
Enabled
NoDispBackgroundPage=dword:00000001Hide screen-saver settings tab in display properties
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
Disabled
NoDispScrSavPage=dword:00000000
Enabled
NoDispScrSavPage=dword:00000001Hide display settings tab in display properties
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
Disabled
NoDispSettingsPage=dword:00000000
Enabled
NoDispSettingsPage=dword:00000001None of the entries should even exist in a normal registry but if the do set all to zero or even delete them
Good Luck

Also, I noticed that if I switch themes (XP to Classic) the tabs reappear. But when I close the box and reopen it, there gone. It almost looks like the "Display Properties" box has been resized. I say that because when the tabs are there,(after a theme switch), and I click on the "Appearance" tab, the "Effects" and "Advanced" buttons at the bottom look a little "cramped". Actually the bottom of the "Advanced" button is missing(hidden). But when the tabs at the top are missing the two buttons look normal.
Is there a way I can resize the "Display Properties" box?

I have a similar problem. I have just used my laptop for the first time in 5 months and have discovered upon trying to connect to a tv display that the top row of advanced display settings are missing.
There used to be 10 tabs (2 rows of 5) altogether, one of which contained a picture of a tv with a button next to it you clicked on to activate the tv display (when an s-video cable is connecting the computer to the tv). Now I only have 1 row of 5!!
I am trying to find out why on a few other forums so will report back if I discover anything. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with a windows update possibly.
Would also appreciate help if anyone has any ideas!
Cheers,
Adam

Here's the fix:
Create a new text file
Open it and paste the following:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity processorArchitecture="*" version="5.1.0.0" type="win32" name="Microsoft.Windows.Shell.shell32"/> <description>Windows Shell</description> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" version="6.0.0.0" publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df" language="*" processorArchitecture="*" /> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> </assembly>
Save the file
Rename the file to WindowsShell.Manifest
Move the file to your %SystemRoot% folder.
(almost always C:/Windows)The problem is .net framework related
