display problems

I really don't know much about computers, but recently my computer died and I had to reboot it. All information was lost and I had to reinstall Windows XP. Everything works fine except the display is stuck at 640x480 and at 16 bit color (there's no other choices in the display folder).
I've tried to go to other sites and follow their instuctions, but it still does not work. I know it has something to do with downloading drivers, but I don't know which one to download.
Is this a problem that I should consult a professional with or can I fix this myself?
