Hi there,
My HD just crashed and so I decided to install everything again. I have a maxtor 60GB HD and so I changed my Bios to read from CD first. After XP took over the installation, and after checking everything on my comp, they asked to delete existing partition and create a new one in NTFS, I did all that and it started formating my old partition and started fomatting in NTFS format. It then copied all neccesary setup files on my comp and after that restarted the comp.
After detecting all IDE drives, during the DMI pool reading, there was an error msg "Disk read error" and told me to press ctr alt del to restart. However, no matter how I do it, it will still read the same error.
The wierd thing is that after I off the comp and let it rest for 30 mins or so, I am able to reboot it properly again and finally complete the installation. This has happened even after I tried to install it umpteen times. Now whenever I restart my comp, I have to let it rest for 30 mins before switching on the comp again!
Thanks a million for your help!! Thanks!!
Cheers
Bong

Here are a some answers:
1. Do you have the proper power supply?
2. Do you have the right cooling fan?Just a note but Maxtor Hard drives are not that dependable. In the future you should get IBM or Western Digital.

Hi...
Why willl the right power supply or cooling fan affect? And this happened to my IBM HD too, that was why I changed to a maxtor. It is not the HD fault cos I tried it with other HD! Please help!!
Cheers

I too am having the same problems running Windows XP Pro, but my system boots and runs normal. I only get this error when I try to install an additional pci card. All I have in the machine now is a video card, sound card & network all pci. This has befuzzled me too. Any help would be appreciated.

I also have gotten that error, i partitioned my Maxtor D740X 60 gb and formatted it with NTFS and install Windows XP and about once out of every 5 reboots i get that same error, but i can just press ctrl+alt+del and itll reboot. I emailed maxtor and they still havent replied. Im wondering if its incompitibility issues because i have it on a Promise ATA100 controller or a power issue, or did i just get a faulty hard drive...

same problem here, disk read error. Well it's time to go to bed now and HOPE that tomorrow it will work again like you guys said.
