i used to have windows 2000pro and wanted to reformat and install winxp, but i had some problems in doing so because i couldn't boot from cd and whenever i tried using a winxp setup floppy disk, it would give me a "disk i/o error." so what i did was i put in a windows 98 boot disk (which worked), and as told, i typed "fdisk" and deleted all partitions. i was then told to boot from the winxp cd so i attempted to do so again (which was a big mistake) but it didn't work because i can't boot from cd. (i checked bios and all seems to be correct). so now, i basically have no OS, and i can't even install one because 1: i can't boot from cd. and 2: when i try the winxp setup floppys, it says "disk i/o error." in short, i'm SCREWED. what can i do to fix this problem and install windows xp? i need some computer genius's to help me. PLEEEEEEEEEEASE. thanks

Ohhh... Isee your problem. The 98 boot disk you had did not have CD-Rom support on it, so when you reformatted, your generic CD-ROM support was nto included. GO make a new boot disk with CD-ROm support, and then reformat that way. After that, make sure that CD-ROM is the first boot device, and then it should work fine.

You got the partition but did you format the drive? Load the 98 floppy again and when it asks you "If you want to have CD support" chose that one and then let the floppy load the drivers for the CDROM and then put in the Windows XP cd.

Try and get hold of another set of Win XP boot disks. The "disk i/o error" you got from the floppy was probably caused by just one bad sector on that particular floppy disk. Bin that disk and use another one.

I did choose the option with cd-rom support, and it says:

"the diagnostic were successfully loaded to drive d.

MSCDEX version 2.25. copyright (c) microsoft corporation 1980-1995.

Drive E = Driver MSCD001 Unit 0
Drive F = Driver MSCD001 Unit 1

To get help, tpe HELP and press ENTER

a:/> "

so i typed "format c:" and it formatted the drive 100%. Is my next step to restart the computer and try the winxp setup floppy's? will it boot from cd now?

Remember? i can't boot from cd because it's not working. I even checked my bio settings and everything SHOULD be working fine but it isn't. and when i try the winxp floppy disks, it says "disk i/o error." now when i restart, it says "invalid system disk. replace disk and press any key." nothing seems to be working :\

Does your computer detect the CD-ROM drive? Make sure that your power and IDE cables are connecting.

The reason why your getting invalid system disk is because you have a floppy in that is not for example a boot disk.
This is what I would try. Put the 98 boot floppy back in and boot the box. That should load the CDROM drivers. Then load the XP cd in the the CDROM and then at a DOS prompt go the the CDROM. cd to d: or e: or where ever the cdrom is and then find the setup.exe for xp and type in setup.exe and see if it will run. I'm not sure if you can run a XP program from a DOS window but that is something you will have to try. If that doesn't work then you need to make double sure that you have the cdrom loading first in the BIOS. XP should self extract.

You are aware that booting from CD is not automatic? During the boot process, you will be prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD". This prompt doesn't stay available very long, so you have to watch for it. It will be at the bottom of your screen.

i tried running setup.exe from DOS but it says "this program cannot be run in DOS mode." and as stated previously, XP won't self extract because it wont boot from CD. i quadruple checked by settings in BIOS and cd is first and floppy 2nd. i don't get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message like most computers do. i just get a blinking "_" and booting from cd doesn't seem to work. i'm running out of things to do. :\ it's all because of the stupid "disk i/o error." :\ any more suggestions?

something just came to mind. and i think that the reason i can't boot from cd is because my primary drive (dvd) is broken. and the drive that actually works (my cdrw) is my secondary drive. so in bios settings, i have "cd" first to boot, and it's not reading because i think it is only reading my primary drive (broken dvd drive) and not the drive that is working (cdrw). i'm going to go switch the drives and hopefully booting from the cd will work.

i switched the drives and it still didn't boot from cd. :\ so i tried using the quick restore cd that came w/ the computer and it actually recognized it!! :) i don't know why any other cd wont boot from cd but the quick restore cd. it's pretty strange. but oh well. thanks for all of the help everyone!

The question comes to mind, "Is it a genuine Windows CD or a copy?" If it's a copy, it might not be bootable. Depending how it's copied, the boot image might have been missed.

it's a copy. so maybe that's why it was missed?
