Hello there,
I'm desperate for help, so first of all thank you for reading.
Right I have a machine that I haven't used in a while because my family deemed it 'kaputt'. It's an average machine that used to run Windows XP Pro. When left to load normally, the computer boots and displays a blue screen saying "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" (with one of the parameters ending in '32' - indicating corrupt file system?). In an effort to fix this, I started a follow a guide on the net saying that I should create six Windows XP Professional boot disks, then perform the 'chkdsk' command when necessary to scan the disk for errors and (hopefully) to fix them.
Unfortunately, after creating the disks and setting the computer to boot from them, the first disk starts to boot but then says "Disk I/O Error" and freezes. There is no alternative to turn the machine off. Another guide on the net says that this message means that I should 'disable any ZIP drives and try again'. I have nothing attached to the machine apart from the basics - mouse, keyboard and monitor, and the master drive selected to boot is simply my hard disk according to BIOS.
Please could someone tell me what to do? Am I going about this the wrong way? Thanks for your time.
Adam x

Those disks are used for XP CD's that are not self-booting. Set BIOS to boot from the CD drive
first in the boot order. Then boot with CD in the drive.

How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 Or SP2 cd you will have to d/l sp1 or sp2 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster.
