just type chkdsk /f in run box under start after a reboot while no programs are running it is used for checking for disk errors hmm i guess so

For myself, I run such things in Windows Safe-Mode. No programs or drivers running there. Hold down F8 during boot. (does a better job of defrag) A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP

Lisa: The defragmenter which comes bundled with XP is a bit lame, a tad slow. You might consider installing the freeware version of Diskeeper Lite. Though made by the same company which makes Microsoft's defragmenters, Diskeeper Lite is a much faster, more thorough, utility. LINK Solarian
