just type chkdsk /f in run box under start after a reboot while no programs are running
it is used for checking for disk errors

For myself, I run such things in Windows
Safe-Mode. No programs or drivers running
there. Hold down F8 during boot. (does a better job of defrag)

The defragmenter which comes bundled with XP is a bit lame, a tad slow.

You might consider installing the freeware version of Diskeeper Lite. Though made by the same company which makes Microsoft's defragmenters, Diskeeper Lite is a much faster, more thorough, utility.

Why does everyone slag XP disk defragmenter? Did you know it is Disk Keeper v7.0?

I have run numerous tests side by side and DiskKeeper Pro v8 isn't any faster or better (in terms of files not defragged)

As the saying goes, 'Opinions vary.'

We did a few comparisons of our own. Among several PCs with drives of various capacities, Diskeeper 8 was 15 to 20% faster than previous defragmenters made by Executive Software.

The system has encountered a problem that it needs to correct before it can run defrag. It's most likely it hit a bad or dead sector and needs to have a look at it. Run this> chkdsk /f and let it run. Then run defrag.

And guys let's answer the guest's question then debate things.
