I recently downloaded Disk Keeper for evaluation. I have tried to run the defragmenter 3 times and on each occassion at about the 18% completion point my system rebooted itself.
I decided that the application was not something I needed so bad I would endure the frustration of getting it to work right now so I uninstalled Disk Keeper.
A week or so later when I tried to run Windows defragmenter I get the message "disk defragmenter snap in failed to initialize. CLSID (43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080 C88593A5)".
How do I repair/replace/etc the WinXP disk defragmenter?

If it makes any difference, I am running XP Home Edition

Thanks

This is a difficult one all I know is that the defrag application is run from this directory file "%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc" you could try replacing this file from someone else's computer or trying to find it on the WinXP Cd. Im no expert but have this helps.

If you boot to your recovery console and type: chkdsk /r with your winxp cd in, it should repair ok.

(winxp uses diskeeper 6 as builtin defrag)

Thank You for your help and suggestions. I did try the Recovery Console (Chkdsk/r)and it ran for a bit but did not repair. After reboot I had the same problem so I bit the bullet, endured the nagging from my wife (networked and connection shared with me) and reinstalled XP.

Hi

I have had the same problems with disk defragmenter. Diskeeper is supposed to certified by MS!! Its crap if it leaves your machine like that on uninstall. Theres not even a mention of this on their web site.

Anyway onto the detail. I've just found this message and have decided to tellyou how I fixed this.

First look for the *dfrg*.dll. There should be 3 entries.

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\dfrgres.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\dfrgui.dll

Next right-click on the dfrg.inf file to make sure the registry settings are ok and after this it will work!
