Up to now I have had no problems but I have just run my defragmenter and it analysed and said it was needed so I ran it and in 15 seconds it was done. Went from 3% to 65% in seconds. I asked it to analyse again and it said it needed to be defrag. I ran again and it went from 3% to 65% in seconds. Its obviously not working properly any suggestions as to why it has happened?

Files That You Cannot Defragment
Also Prefetch files are not moved.
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
The Prefetch folder is quite large.
I have deleted all files there, even
Layout.ini, at times without problems.
It will rebuild itself over time.

try free
diskeeper lite
I went to that when my defragmener stalled out too.Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Actually while in Windows Safe-Mode you should do the following in the same order-
Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XPAnother thing I notice that is taking up space is
EVENT VIEWER logs. Go into EV then right click
each catagory, then click "Clear all events".
---------------------
Also check all the files in
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

Layout.ini, at times without problems.

Then do this to check for bad sectors on HDD:

Check mark both items under "Check Disk Options",
on your way into starting Error-Checking Tool.

Next is to Defrag HDD:
How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP

Thanks pip22 I ran it in safe mode and I presure it worked as it took about 10 mins. However is this a temp solution what has caused the defrag to give up the ghost.
Thanks Chuck 2 I shall give your suggestions a go too. All suggestions are helpful.(well polite ones anyway)

Defrag does not work well in normal Windows mostly because of programs are running in the background, and there files cannot be moved if the programs are running.
For example, compare the Task Manager process list in normal Windows, then Safe-Mode.

chuck 2 - I have tried doing all of the above you suggested in normal mode and in safe mode too. No errors what so ever it said volume clean. After I completed all the above in safe mode I ran the defrag and it was over in seconds I then asked it to analyse it again and it said I needed to defrag. So it is not only telling me this in normal mode but in safe mode too. Don't know what else to try, except for using another defrag like XPUser4Real suggested. But I would Like to know why it has suddenly stopped working I would rather try to solve the problem any suggestions.

XPUser4Real I have just found that the free version of Diskeeper lite 7 has been updated from version 7.0.4180 to 7.0.430 you can find it at www.executive.com/diskeeper/update-patch/701_download.asp and thanks for the suggestion.

Ignore last post on checking further the update is for the purchased version not the free version. Sorry my mistake

So did the diskeeper lite work for you? I myself now use the paid version and it works great. I just set it and forget it and it defrags every morning at 3am, cuz I work on alot of videos.
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Yes it did work thanks. My computer will work a bit quicker now. Like you I have ongoing video files on the computer. So defrag makes a big difference to the speed.

Glad to see some of your problem is resolved, thanks for posting back!
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
