I find the disk defrag utility on WindowsXP Home Edition very slow (I have a 40GB disk with 25GB free space, P4 1.3, 384 Mb RAM). It can take up to 50 minutes to finish. Are there any configuration settings on this utility? Is there any other free utility available? Thank you

Is this your first defrag? If not when did you last defrag the HD? Were you defragging while running applications?

If u defrag regularly it will not take long each time, Also run a disk cleanup and chkdsk bfore the defrag. Here's a utility u cud download instead of using the XP defragger, its faster, the full version gives you some nice scheduling features-

more internet misinformation.

defragmenting never develops bad sectors any more than using the disk does since bad sectors is a physical issue.

guess bobby_in never read what happens to ntfs if you never defrag....

Where do these halfbaked ideas come from anyway?
