Can anyone tell me how to get the disk cleanup to finish? I get 3 dots in the meter and it stops there, never completing. Any advice would be appreciated, if it can be followed by a novice. Thanks in advance.

Try doing it in Windows
Safe-Mode. No programs or drivers running
there. Hold down F8 during boot.

If you haven't used disk cleanup for a long time, it may simply be that it has a large number of old files to compress.

Try it again, but this time give it 15-20 minutes. I had a friend who, when using DC for the first time, had to wait that long; there were literally thousands of old files to compress.

Solarian, The computer is only 2 mos. old, and hardly been used. This was the first time I tried using Disk cleanup.

The same situation applied to my friend. If you like, I can supply instructions for running a disk cleanup using run commands.

Post back if you want the info. 8-)

MarilynE,An easy solution to that problem is to go to the link below and scroll down to 48 and you'll see the "Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes" Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.
"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes

Just click on the words "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" not the underscored word "Undo".

MarilynE:

Below are the instructions. You do not need to enter CMD. Simply click on RUN and create your first profile. Example:

cleanmgr /Sageset:100

You'll notice you have a few more options to choose from than the regular disk cleanup. Check off the ones you want to run, then click on OK. The utility will close (your profile has been created and stored).

To run your new profile, click on RUN then type in:

cleanmgr /Sagerun:100

Click OK.

Whether creating or running a profile, make certain there is a space between "cleanmgr" and the forward slash (/).

What I've written above is a short-cut method for using DC with run commands and will work fine. But you should familiarize yourself with the full instructions below. 8-)

_______________________________

DISK CLEANUP USING RUN COMMANDS

XP's Disk Cleanup tool, available by clicking on "Free up space on your hard disk" from the Performance and Maintenance section of the Control Panel, will clean your hard disk of unnecessary files. You can make the program even more powerful by creating separate disk cleanup profiles, using the command line version of the Disk Cleanup tool, cleanmgr.exe.

Here's how to do it:

First, you'll need to create a disk cleanup profile. Start by typing cleanmgr /Sageset:n where n is any number between 1 and 65535.

The Disk Cleanup Settings screen will appear, allowing you to select which items you would like to be cleaned using this profile. It offers you more cleanup options than the version of Disk Cleanup run from the Windows GUI – you'll be able to automatically remove Debug dump files, Setup log files, Catalog files for the Content Indexer, temporary setup files, and old Chkdsk files, among other items that the GUI version of Disk Cleanup won't delete. However, if you're creating a profile to clean a drive other than the one that contains Windows, most of these options won't be enabled. You'll only be able to automatically clean the Recycle Bin and Catalog files for the Content indexer.

Select the kinds of files you want to delete, click on OK and the profile will be created.

Next, you need to run the profile you've just created. To run the profile, type cleanmgr /Sagerun:n where n is the number of the profile you've just created. You can create multiple profiles for different disks and purposes.

Wow, you guys are incredible! I've been having troubles here this morning, and both my techno-savvy sons are unavailable at the moment. I googled for "disk cleanup freeze" and here you are. Tufenuf, you get a two-fer for this timely tip. Worked like a charm for me too, and I thank you immensely. I'm such a techno-dinosaur that things like "this file could possibly be corrupt and ruin your machine forever" do scare the bejezzes out of me, but ya know...the vast majority of people in the world are well-intentioned and trustworthy -- looks like there are a bunch of nice and very helpful ones hanging out here. I've bookmarked the site, and will tell my equally nervous friends that help is just a keystroke away. Thanks so much!

I seem to be going through the same problem as everyone else here... I googled the problem and it came up with this page.

Tufenuf, what does that patch do exactly? Can I not compress the old files anymore?

BAAAH. I can't figure out what's wrong with this damn thing.

Kat, The link below explains the problem and has a manual registry edit fix. The Fix at Kelly's Korner basically corrects the registry automatically without the need of doing a manual registry edit. Using the fix will not cause you any problems with compressing files.

Thanks a lot... I used that patch... but now "compress old files" doesn't show up at all (as one of the options in disk cleanup).

Is this supposed to happen? Or did I do something wrong?

Thanks SO much Tufenuf. You've been a great help.

Kat, You didn't do anything wrong. In essence, it disables the compress function.
After that, the tool will execute less that function. You won't have any problems and if you ever decide you want that function back you would just go to that link and instad of clicking on the words "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" you would click on the word "Undo" and download & run that file which will give you that option back. I'd just leave it like you have it now.

Ah, ok. That makes a bit more sense now :)

The thing is, I really want to compress the old files because it just seems like I have no space on my computer anymore. I have NO idea where it's all going! I wish there was some way that I could figure out how much space each folder etc on my computer was taking up because something just does not add up. Bleh. I hate space crunches.

Kat, You can download "TreeSize V1.71" for Free at the link below which will show you the size for all folders & files on your hard drive. I'd go into Folder Options/View tab and set it up to Show all files(including hidden files). Check it out.
