I have the exact same problem, must be stupid Microsoft again :-)
When I run diskclean up it runs and runs and runs, if I click cancel the damn thin is still using 100% of my CPU in the background and causing a huge slowdown and I have to end it in task manager and thjen my system is back to normal untill I run it again
WTF is going on, it's very annoying

Okay I will give you the link where you can download Disk Clean Up Version 4.4. When you are ready to download just save it to your A: Drive meaning 3½ Floppy. Then run it and it will take like 20 minutes. I recommend this because it cleans up unwanted temp files on your computer.

Lynn, Go to the link below, scroll down to "Fixes for Windows XP" and using the downward arrow button choose "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" and download the .reg file and either double click it or right click it and choose merge. This should correct the problem you're having which is quite common.
