OK, I just ran Disk Cleanup (out of curiosity) for the first time. Right off the bat it said, "Compressing old files." I noticed this about a minute after it started, and of course I immediately cancelled it. Now I don't want people telling me why I should leave it alone - if I have files I want to compress, I compress them myself, using an algorithm of my choice. I'm just looking for a solution: how do I undo this, or at least how do I find out which files it compressed? There's no option to find compressed files using Windows' default file finder. Please advise, thanks.

It's not compressing any of your files, mainly just system files. Such as the uninstallers for hotfixes. By default it only compresses files not accessed it the past 50 days. It's completely transparent to you and Xp so there isn't any harm in letting it compress them.

But it's your pc and you don't want it to do it. Just let Disk cleanup finish, it will give you the option not to compress the files.

Compressed folders have a blue file name. Thats the only way I know to tell them apart for non-compressed files.
