When trying to run Disk Cleanup, the program says that it is "compressing files, this may take a few minutes." It seems to get frozen on this step, and won't go any further. Does anyone know how to remedy this problem, or maybe alternatives?

This problem is usually caused because the "compress old files" hangs. You can fix it (if you aren't afraid to use the registry) by doing this:

Locate and then click the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\CompressOldFiles
On the edit menu, click Delete
When prompted to 'Confirm Key Delete' click Yes.
Quit Registry Editor.
This will free it up and it will act normally.
The usual precautions should be taken, i.e. you should back up registry before beginning.

sindustry, An easy solution to that problem is to go to the link below and scroll down to 48 and you'll see the "Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes" Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.

"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.
