Disk cleanup freezes CPU at 100%

OS: win xp
CPU/Ram: pent 4 1.5ghz/512

I have a pentium 4 1.5ghz with 512mb ram. Lately when I try to run disk cleanup it will just hang there forever and not pop up to the window that shows what you can clean off. If i look in the task manager it shows my cpu at 100% even after I close disk cleanup. It only frees back up after I close the process called "cleanmgr" in the processes tab. Any ideas on whats up with my disk cleanup
