Comment:

I recently replace a hard drive from one of my old computers with an extra hard dirve I had from a now deseased computer. And after replacing it I started up the computer and it took a long time to come up with

Primary Master: WDC Wd12C0... ect ect. (Wich im hoping is the hard drive)

then right after that it goes to another screen that says

Verifying DMI Pool Data..............

Disk Boot Faliure

But on top of everything it says Primary Master Disk Hdd S.M.A.R.T. Capabilities...None. With that said does that mean I have to enter something in set up? And if it does how exactlly can you get in it if theres a password preventing me, that I forgot? Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Is there anything on the hard drive you got from the deceased system, like an Operating system?

The message just means that there is no "boot system" on the hard drive. If it's recognized in the BIOS, then you just need to format and install the O.S.

And the S.M.A.R.T. message just means that this option is turned off in the BIOS, or not available on this drive, but you don't need it to run the system, only to auto check drive errors.

Yeah it has windows Xp. I downloaded "windows homw utility: set up disk for floppy disk install" from microsoft.com on a disk, but that did nothing. Other then windows it has all my old stuff like music, movies, ect. I have a Nvidia graphics card on both pc. and thats pretty much it. How can I get to bios if its in set up blocked by a pass word i dont have? :/

If it's a desktop, find the jumper on the motherboard that will reset the bIOS, it will clear the password. If you can't find the jumper, just make sure it's unplugged and pop the battery out for 30 seconds.

Moving a hard drive with Windows XP on it from one computer to another seldom works unless the hardware is almost identical. Windows tries to load drivers for hardware that is no longer there and crashes.

Try doing a "repair" instead of a clean installation. That will load the correct drivers and corresponding system files, but "should" leave your data intact.

You need to access your bios.
if you have a CMOS bios you will need to locate a bypass coded (on the net). its going to take some time but its out there.
DO NOT FLASH YOUR BIOS!
a CMOS bios with not reset the code with a jumper or removal of the batery.
after you access your bios check the boot drives. make sure the proper drive is booting first.
Also disable Smart drive in the bios for all hard disk's. if the HD you just installed is bad after you format it windows will tell you. Smart drive may not let your drive boot if its bad.
also check you jumper settings on the drive you just installed.

Well it I was able to get rid of the password by taking out the battery, and on top of the set up screen it said Phoenix- AwardBios CMOS set up utility, but I didnt find anything about reparing installation in bios. all it did was give me these options:

Standard CMOS features
Advanced Bios features
Advanced chip set features
Intergrated peripherals
Power managment
PnP/PCI Configuration
Pc Health Status
Frequency Controls
Load Fail-Safe Defaults
Load Optimized Defautls
Set Superviser password
Set User Passwords
Save & Exit
Exit Without saving

And I looked in everyone but nothing. What am I doing wrong?

emuarcade: What makes you think that you can't clear the CMOS by using the jumper or removing the battery?

Xmusicxmanx: There are no "repair" functions in the BIOS, but you can go to the "Advanced BIOS features" and set the boot order to boot from the CD ROM drive first and the Hard drive next.

Then put your XP CD in the drive and reboot the computer. Hit any key if it asks if you want to boot from CD, then choose "Repair" from the blue menu screen. Then just follow the prompts.

There's not much you can do without an XP CD. If there was a way for you to slave the hard drive to another computer you could go in and delete the IDE drivers and that might allow XP to boot on the new computer. But I'm afraid that may be a little beyond your capabilities, no offense.

Your best bet to save your data is to take the hard drive to your local computer shop and have them back up the data to CD. Or buy a copy of Windows XP and proceed as I outlined earlier. Make sure that you buy the right version to match what you have on that hard drive (Home or Pro)

Ah! I got windows xp disk, but it says (sumed up) windows xp has to shut down to prevent damage to my computer because a file called partmgr.sys page_fault_in_nonpaged_areas. It says to restart and press F8 and start it in safe mode. But it wount restart and I have to turn it off and when it starts back up F8 only makes a noise and nothing comes up. Is there any other way to go around this if not am I screwed?

Did you already do the "Repair" install?

Can you get into "Safe mode"?

You can also try booting up with the Windows CD, choose "R" for the recovery console and type "CHKDSK /R" at the command prompt. Let it run, may take a while, when it's done, type "exit" and reboot.

Well what I did since the hard drive was given to me I just reformatted the harddrive with the windows xp cd and I got the instructions here: http://www.cyberwalker.com/faqs/rei... Because I wasnt able to get into safe mode and for some reason repair wouldnt go all the way through! :/ So i tought i would just reinstall windows xp and start from new, but when I tried to install it again I get this message:
"Set up could not read the cd you inserted, or the Cd is not a valid windows cd"
Then it says please insert one of the following OSs: Windows Xp- Windows work station 3.15. Is there any resason a $100 disk would be saying that? It goes all the wat to set up then stops. Is it because of the reformat?

It is probably an "update" CD, which means it wants proof that you had a previous copy of Windows that you're upgrading from and by formatting the hard drive, you've erased that proof.

If you have even a windows 98SE CD, or a boot floppy, you can point the installation to that location and it will install.

If you don't have that, go to bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98SE startup disk, put it on a floppy and put it in your floppy drive and then let the XP installation find it.

Is the Windows 98SE startup disk the Windows 98 SE OEM Boot disk or the Windows 98 SE Custom, No Ramdrive boot disk?

When it asks you for the disk, did you try using the drop down menu and browsing to the floppy drive?

It it doesn't recognize the floppy at boot up, it was either corrupted when you made it or the floppy drive in that computer isn't working.

Do you know anyone that you can borrow a Windows 98 or 2000 CD from? All you would need to do is put it in the CD when it asks for it for about 10 seconds!

A full version would be better, but they are not going to take the upgrade back now that the seal is broken.

Wow, that's pretty good! Most places won't let you return licensed software once it's been opened.

Let us know how the "clean" install works out.
