Disappearing Desktop Icons

I have a wierd problem. Sometimes when I click on an icon on my desktop all my desktop icons will disappear for like three seconds and then reappear. I will then have to click again on the program I intended to open and it will then work. Sometimes the same thing happens when I close my internet browser or when I close all windows. One time this happened I had my desktop icons arranged a certain way and after they disappeared for three seconds they reappeared as if they were auto arranged. Yesterday this happened and I lost three zip files I had just previously downloaded. Does anyone know what is causing this? It's as if my desktop is refreshing itself.

Before you look for the cause of your desktop refreshing. I'll make a suggestion to you go to Windows Explorer and make a folder named Downloads, now when you download files save them to this folder and not to the desktop.
