I have got to load a replacement drivers disk from BT, and the disk states that you must disable any firewall or anti-virus software, I haven't a clue about this, how does one find the software , and how does one disable it, and then enable it.
Please treat this as urgent, thanks in advance.
I have tried control-alt-delete, and couldn't see any of the software.

First of all you SHOULD KNOW if you have any ANTI-VIRUS OR FIREWALL, If you don't have any you really shouldn't be on the internet in the first place, I am guessing that because you don't know if you have ANY PROTECTION you don't have any! Better get some ANTI-VIRUS and FIREWALL sorted out FAST, or the BT drivers will be the least of your problems.

Go to Network Connection - Right Click on your ISP - Properties- Advanced Tab

That is where you Enable\Disable the XP Firewall

It is Disabled by Default so I imagine you don't have it on anyway

When you have finished with your BT Drivers then turn that Firewall on before you go back onto the Internet

And as orsan says - get an Anti-Virus Program - here is a Free one...

Willy 33 and Lesley.
You should know that the firewall that comes with Windows is really crap in fact it must be the "WORST FIREWALL EVER CREATED" DON'T put your trust in it at all.

If he doesn't have one at all then the XP Firewall is better than nothing and doesn't need any configuration etc - at least it'll stop things getting in

To Orsan and Lesley, why do you asssume I don't have anti-virus and firewall protection, I do have, (not Windows), I just don't con the internet enough to know how to disable and enable it, and I am not on the net, I am standalone.
I am installing BT Broadband on a new computer, so do I understand by what you say, that I have nothing to worry about, for there won't be any anti-virus on firewall on there.
If that is the case, I take it that I have to install these programs before installing Broadband, and I can't get them from the net if I'm not signed on,
Thank you for answering, looking foreard to your replies.

" why do you asssume I don't have anti-virus and firewall protection, I do have, (not Windows), I just don't con the internet enough to know how to disable and enable it, "

Ok - so you DO have an AV Program and a Firewall Program - but you don't seem to know how they work..

...are they or are they not currently Running...

...if they are Running then they usually have an Icon on the System Tray (Notification Area) - right click and Exit \Disable - whatever the option given...

...if they are not Running then that is ok - they are in effect Disabled - Run both as soon as you establish your BT Connection

"I am not on the net, I am standalone. "

'standalone' is usualy taken to mean 'not networked' ie not joined to any other Computer in the house - that has nothing to do with whether or not your one Computer has or has not an Internet Connection

I assume you are Posting here from someone else's Computer

" I am installing BT Broadband on a new computer, so do I understand by what you say, that I have nothing to worry about, for there won't be any anti-virus on firewall on there. "

I don't think either Orsan or I said that?

The AV and Firewall Programs are on your Computer - so you said ??

" I take it that I have to install these programs before installing Broadband "

Not if you already have them!

Please clarify...

Do you or do you not have an AV Program?

If so - which is it - Norton? - McAfee?

Do you or do you not have a Firewall Program ?

If so - which is it - Sygate - Zone Alarm?

Maybe it is a combined Suite?

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, I am writing this on my old computer, but I have bought a new one, and when I tried to install BT Broadband on my new computer (Athlon 3ghz),
it couldn't find my ADSL Modem, after contacting BT, they sent me a disk with new Broadband Drivers.
I have got Norton anti-virus, and Zone alarm on my old computer, I have just got a bit confused, so, I take it that after installing Broadband, I have to install Norton and Zone alarm anew.
Can I download them again, as I don't have any disks for them.
Thanks for your help, and your indulgence.

I am now talking about your new Computer - which does not have any 'commercial' Firewall nor AV Program

As soon as you have Installed your BT Drivers - I would enable XP's Firewall - it is quite satisfactory for the time-being

Then I would get the Free AVG AV Program as mentioned earler - and Update it

Then you can Download the latest Version of whichever Firewall you choose - once Installed then turn off the XP one

You may or may not wish to stay with the AVG Program but if you choose another then turn the AVG off

Whereas Zome alarm do a Free Firewall - Norton AV you would have to pay for

I would aslo get any outstanding Microsoft Critical Updates

Willy33.
No firewall or AV discs, were they preinstalled when you bought PC or did you download them? Either way you can make yourself copys of the Antivirus and firewall from the old computer, if you don't know how e-mail me and I will explain. Personally I find Norton firewall better than Zone alarm, Avg is quite good for a freeby.
