I accidentally disabled my display driver yesterday. Now after the boot sequence the screen goes blank. Ive tried everything from booting from the recovery cd to booting safe mode and nothing works. I want to try to get to the control panel blindly and enable the driver. I would appreciate it if someone could give me the keyboard directions of how to do this.

disabling your display adapter, you just boot to enable vga mode, unless you also disabled that driver ,in which case stupid would be a better description for you.in which case run a repair install by booting to the xp cd.

Yeah I tried that already, it didn't work. Do you have any other suggestions?
I was thinking that if i could get keyboard directions to get to the display settings i could enable the driver.
Thanks anyway.

What are you trying to do? Get into device manager? Assuming that windows is loading OK, but you just can't see it, Winkey-R will bring up the "Run" dialog box. Then "c:\windows\system32\mmc.exe c:\windows\system32\devmgmt.msc" will bring up device manager.

Type what's in the quotes as all one line (it's one command, not two) with a space between "..mmc.exe" and "c:/win...".

If you have a BLANK 'BLACK' or 'BLUE' screen, then there is something else wrong.

Even if you deleted the driver Windows XP would at startup identify the device and install a driver.

If you can see you BIOS / POST then complete a start up in SAFE MODE by typing in F8. This should enable you to identify if there is a device listed for you Graphics card.

If you can't see BIOS / POST and can't get to SAFE MODE, then look further into your video card for other basic problems.

Well, I don't know for sure if our device lists are close enough, but if your display adaptor is the second device that starts with "D", then the following sequence may work for you. So load Device Manager and try...

"Tab,d,d,RightArrow,DownArrow,Enter,Tab,UpArrow,Enter,Enter"

My mistake... assumed the second last "Enter" would be the same as clicking "OK", but intead it brings up the trouble shooter and then the last Enter gets an error because there was nothing entered in the search box... One more try then... try this sequence...

Tab,d,d,RightArrow,DownArrow,Enter,Tab,UpArrow,Tab,Enter

Umm... the only way for me to be absolutely sure of everything you have to type would be to disable my own display and view all steps involved in reactivating it... which I can't do if I disable it, so I tried the routine with my network adapter. I needed an extra "Enter" or so at the end, so you could try that. I didn't need to reboot, but that may not be the case for the display.

It's also possible that your display adapter isn't the second device which starts with "D", so you could be messing with the properties for something else (but you don't have much to lose at the moment, so I wouldn't worry too much about it).

If anything else crosses my mind, I'll post again.

Maybe a system restore?

Winkey-R
type in "c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe"
Enter
Enter
LeftArrow
Alt-N
Enter

That's as far as I went with it... you may need another Enter to get it going or to reboot when it's done.
