If MSN Explorer 6 on Windows Me is any indication of what you are experiencing with XP. I like the new interface, but MSN messenger causes gobs of problems. Sometimes I get TWO instances of it when running MSN explorer. Well, I have NEVER liked MSNmessenger so I thought I would "uninstall it". Well, it is now a "CRITICAL COMPONENT" of the future of MSN services. Sure, you can right click and hit "exit", but the dang thing is still going to pop up randomly next time you reboot your machine and cause you grief. Likewise, MSN explorer has its own charming RANDOM FEATURES, and one time I could could not even ctrl+alt+del my way out of it. The ONLY way I cound make it go away with out turuning the machine off completely cold is unplug the phone line to my modem, and hit "connect". Of course the dialog box comes up and says, "hey I can't get a dial tone". Click cancel.

But just like MSN messenger - it comes back to haunt you every time you reboot.

The fact that I cannot even uninstall it with out some other MSFT application saying, "hey, I know it's really superfluous but I am not going to let you machine run trouble free with out it" REALLY has me hacked.

This worked for me:

Uninstall unwanted components
Submitted by Michel Bordeleau, Montreal, Canada
Do you want more control over the components installed with Windows® XP? With the following trick, you can uninstall components such as MSN Explorer, MSN Messenger, and Microsoft Games.
To change the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog, you must edit the sysoc.inf file. The Sysoc.inf file is in a hidden folder, so first you will need to display hidden files.
To display hidden files and folders:
1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Folder Options.
3. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
To edit the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog:
1. First, make a copy of sysoc.inf (found on the hard disk at \winnt\inf\sysoc.inf) before proceeding so that you can restore the initial configuration if necessary. Give the copy a different name, such as sysoc2.inf.
2. Open the Sysoc.inf file. Each line of text in the file represents a component that can be displayed in the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog.
3. Delete the word HIDE for any component that you want to see in the dialog (do not erase the commas).
4. Save the Sysoc.inf file, then close it, and reboot your computer.
The Add/Remove Windows Components dialog will now display the items you want.
To uninstall components using Add/Remove Windows Components:
1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Add/Remove Windows Components button in the left column.
4. Select a component, and then click Details to see items included in the component.
5. To uninstall a component, or an item within a component, click to clear the check box next to the item name.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSMSGS

"preference" option won't work on mine (build2504). Peoples r going to have to rely on editing the registry.

Even if you take it out of autorun If you run outlook express it will restart - even when you goto www.hotmail.com (VBscript)
Rename the msmsgs.exe file and update the link in the start menu and it will not annoy ya

DONT MODIFY YOUR REGISTRY - unless your sure u know what your doin

I just used the method in response #6.
It worked perfectly.
It was fast and easy, no reboot, and no messing with the registry required.
Thanks Sirraj

#6 is the best method because it actually allows you to uninstall it. When you use that method though, it's "Windows Messenger" that you want to uncheck. I was expecting it to say MSN messenger, which is what it really is, but it wasn't listed there.

Registry hacks or renaming the file may work, but they you have the computer attempt to run the file or do other processes that waste valuable time on your system. No, it won't be noticable, but you add up lots of those and that's what gives you the slowdown that people ususally see after having their system up for a year or more.

Another way to do it, a little less tedious. Try this:

To disable Windows Messenger in Windows XP Professional Edition:

Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then press ENTER.

Navigate through the following:

Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Messenger

Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to run, and then click Enabled.

Click OK, and then quit the Group Policy snap-in.

Response #6 is the best for me, since it's a proper way to really get rid of the sucker.

Thanks Sirraj !

Now I'm going to try to revert to IE5. Should have kept Win2k, I guess...

While I agree #6 does disable messenger from comming up when windows starts, it doesn't stop it from comming up when either hotmail or outlook is used.
I can say that I did use #15 Drew's tip and it did do as he claimed, it did lock up the outlook for about 20 seconds when I first brought it up (after the fix) but after that, it's working fine.
Thanks Drew!
