Hello!
I keep trying to disable msmsgs.exe because if it is enabled then I keep getting SPAM IM's Popping up on my screen!

I thought I had turned it off but now that I've installed System's Mechanic 5 it keeps telling me that it is constantly making itself run in the background!

Any Ideas?

Thanks!

1) open the windows messenger window, go to its options, and uncheck everything u can (such as run on the bacground, start with windows, etc)

2) create a .reg file with this inside:
------------[ Begin cut ]------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
"PreventAutoRun"=dword:00000001
"PreventRun"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express]
"Hide Messenger"=dword:00000002

------------[ End cut ]------------

Save it and double click on it.

Also, some antivirus or privacy control software (such as Norton Internet Security) has an option to control messages of MSN messenger, unfortunetly they are so dumb and dont know the difference between MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, so they disregard your wish not to start it and force msmsgs.exe to start whenever that software is active.
So, u'll have to disable such feature if u have such software installed.

Good luck.

If I were you I would uninstall it by going into Control Panel,Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components....you could then install MSM Messenger which is easier to control if you want this IM.

@Rich Mentzel:
1) u can not uninstall Windows Messenger without first removing "HIDE" from appropriate line from C:\Windows\Inf\sysoc.inf

2) by uninstalling Windows Messenger u remove several features from MSN Messenger, such as "Remote Assistance", "Whiteboard", "Application Sharing" and video conference (I think since v7 the later (video conference) is not depended anymore on Windows Messenger)

Guess what? I always do it without that.

I could care less I seldom use it and never use those features with MSN, and getting rid of the presence of that annoying Ap, is worth losing half the OS anyway.
