disable invalid shortcut search

OS: WinXP SP2
CPU/Ram: Pentium III, 256 mbs ram

when I try to delete an invalid shortcut windows explorer always starts searcbing for the target file like mad. Is there a way to disable this annoying feature?

php, assume you have the shortcut somewhere like your desktop. Single click to select and either hit BACKSPACE or the seperate DELETE key. If that fails, try RIGHTCLICKING and when the dropdown appears, delete. If that fails, see if you can drag/drop the shortcut to the recycle bin. One should work, if not, let us know.

but when I hit the del-button on my keyboard, windows displays a search dialog, searching for the file the link is supposed to point to. I want to disable this search function. there must be some key in the registry
