Comment:
MSN Messenger has this annoying habit of turning letters in parenthesis into emoticons. It makes it difficult to "talk math" to people when I try to type "f(x)" and I get a stupid emoticon showing up.

With Live Messenger (I imagine MSN Messenger would be the same or very close to it). When you log in and you see your contacts list, maximise it so that this fills the whole screen and the menu bar appears across the top.
Next click on "Tools" at the top of the page, then click on "Options". In the left hand column click on "Messages" and uncheck the "Show emoticons" and "Show custom emoticons" boxes.
This will prevent them showing on your screen but your fellow mathematics enthusiasts will need to do the same if they are experiencing the same problems.
