I was wondering if anyone could help me keep my friend from changing the wallpaper. I've been searching the registry for the keys to change but can't find them. I want to remove the option from the context menus on all the programs that make it possible to change the wallpaper.

If you don't kbow what key to edit in the registry, then that's a good hint that you should not be playing with it.
Instead you should get a program like X-setup. This program allows you to modify XP in many different ways; locking out varoius menus and panels, double clicking and so on.

mathguy, Go to the link below and under the letter "W"---"Wallpaper - Desktop - Disable Changing" you'll find a "Disable" reg file to download & run. You'll also find a manual registry edit if you so desire. If you download the reg fix just save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Thanks Tufenuf, but that doesn't work from keeping people from changing it with right click context menus. Blackbill, isn't that a little presumptive?

Possibly... (don't mean to be presumptive) but then I've seen too many people write in after some registry tweaks with locked up machines.

mathguy, If you'd like to remove that entry on the right click context menu instructions are at the link below.
How To Remove and Add Right-Click Menu Items
You'll find plenty more info on this by doing a google search for: remove item from right click context menu

Thanks, guys, I've found it. I figured there was some global option that I just couldn't find in the registry. I was going to resort to removing the option from each right click context menu from which it was possible. But I've found the global key that disables changing wallpaper in general. The thing is, it wasn't there to begin with!! If this key is NOT there, then you can change the wallpaper freely. But if it is there, then the only wallpaper that works is the image specified by the key. It's location is:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
with a REG_SZ key named Wallpaper, and it specifies the location of the wallpaper image via either the local path, or UNC.Thanks again.
