Comment:

had to try a "dirty install" on my wife's laptop (had the corrupted config/system file problem). I can "see" the old files, but I get "access is denied". I just want to get the files, pics, etc & burn to cd & then reformat/ reinstall. Any ideas?

No sure what you mean by "dirty install". Did you do an in-place install or a parallel install?

What user are you logging in as? You should be logged on as your wife (who has access to the files)...or as administrator.

Well, that's the prob. Tried the repair console, no dice. Put in the original (Dell) install disc, and let windows reinstall. I now have "new" user files under "my documents": The new ones with the "new" install, and the "old" ones from the previous install. i just cannot access the "old" ones: I get "access is denied", and I cannot log in as administrator. Any IDeas?

You'll need to take ownership of the files/folders.

Well, I restarted in SAFE/Networking, dumped files to my PC, then reformatted, reintalled. So far, so good. Thanks for the replies. Merry Christmas!
