I have had DirectX 9 working happily on my system for months. Last night Everquest patches, and today DirectX 9 is hosed, so I try reinstall. Install hangs while copying ksfilters.inf, and says if failed to copy a required file and closes. I tried 4 times from the webinstall, and downloaded the developer version which hung up at exactly the same place.

Microsoft says DirectX 9 cannot be uninstalled, and I cannot reinstall it. I am stumped.

I would sure appreciate any help.

Thanks =)

I did manage to rollback to DirectX 8.1. However now EQ requires DirectX 9b, the latest version. When I tried to install that over the nominally functional 8.1 I rehosed it.

Subsequently I was not able to return to a nominally functional 8.1 install. I did system restore, and again have DirectX 9 working property. It's not 9b tho, and EQ requires 9b.

Now I am afraid to try to upgrade to 9b again, and cannot access my EQ accounts.

Any thoughts on why DirectX 9b install fails to copy a required file (and always at ksfilter.inf)?

I'd sure appreciate some understanding of this problem.

Thanks =)

Hi Uzir.

He is my reply to a post on the Win ME forum that my be of some help in this regard.

Make sure your firewall is UN INSTALLED not turned off. Your anti virus should be turned off. Both these application dive deep into your system.

If your anti virus is left active it will prevent certain files from loading properly as with you firewall.

Now go to this site and from there down load DirectX. The down load file (and make sure that_it_is) the "Redist" version.

It comes as a zipped file, as opposed to the download auto-install type put out by Microsoft.

When you have downloaded the zipped file and you have turned off all the above (it would not hurt also in this case to Ctrl+Alt+Del all other files leaving only Explorer and Sys Tray.

When you unzip, the install will be quick and clean unlike the painful drag out of Microsoft download. You will also retain a zipped version of DirectX for future if ever required.

Good luck

I did in fact uninstall both my AV and Zonealarm. The only firewall was windows xp =P.

I did that prior to the commencement of this problem.

The redist ver is the last version I tried.. took hours to download it from http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/9/c/c9c8a1d4-7690-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90update_redist.exe
at 28.8k. It failed at exactly the same point as the MS auto install version.

Thanks for the suggestion tho! =)

I again tried to install from the redist version, and hosed DirectX 9 again. After running DirectX Eradicator 1.09 I am back at DirectX 8.1 which dxdiag reports is functioning nominally.

Can someone tell me what files need to go where for DirectX 9.0b to function properly? I can manually extract the files from the cabs using winace. I just don't know where to put which files.

Thanks! =)
