I have connected my laptop and desktop via direct cable connection through the printer ports. I can get data fine and see what i want too. How can I share the internet connection via direct cable connection? thanks

Windows XP does this automatically. Go to network connections through the control panel, and find the 'set-up a home network.' option, or some phrase to that effect. It will walk you through it.

that only works if im using network cards. i want to setup internet sharing through the lpt1 ports

Are you sure about that? I've never done it, but I would think it should work for a direct cable connection.
