Comment:

HijackThis v1.99.1 shows that dimsntfy.dll is missing from my System32 folder.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dimsntfy - %SystemRoot%\System32\dimsntfy.dll (file missing)
I checked the System32 folder, and dimsntfy.dll is present. Does anyone know what kind of "symptom" might be associated with a missing or corrupt dimsntfy.dll file? My system is currently running slower than ever, and the only other overt anomaly is that the System32 folder opens at startup/reboot. I've recently defragged all drives. Thanks for any suggestions.

HJT! is a useful tool, but it must used with caution.
It is not infallible, it finds only unexpected entries, and most of what it finds is NOT malicious.
Don't select anything it finds to "fix" (remove the registry entry for) unless you know what you are doing.

If you like, there are places on the web you can upload a HJT! log to, and have people analyze your log to see if they can identify any entry as being malicious, but this is NOT one of them.

Defragging your drives has very little effect on newer computers.

Lots of things can slow down your computer, and many of them are not malware.

Make sure you have a decent amount of free space on your C partition - if it is too full, Windows will slow down a lot because it doesn't have enough space for a decent sized swap file. If you have that problem. you will notice Windows is accessing the hard drive a lot more than it used to while booting, and frequently at other times.
