In the market for a new digital camera. Anyone have ideas as to best price and place to purchase, On or off the web. Best camera for the money. Small as possible and not bulky. Will be using this camera with windows xp. Thanks for suggestions.

I purchased the Nikon Coolpix 2100 about 2months ago and I'm very happy with it. Granted it is 2.1megapixel camera but I'm not printing out any of the photos. If you are going to print I suggest getting a 3.1megapixel camera or higher.
As far as price, the camera itself was 249 but after a 64meg CF card, a bag and a battery recharger w/batteries I had spent another hundreded bucks.
I myself prefer to purchase things where I live. The net might be cheaper but in a store you know what you are getting and if it is broke, you can go back to the store and return it without any issues.
As far as being small and not bulky. The Nikon Coolpix line is a very small and far from bulky.

I have one of these and love it! Not too big and takes superb pics!

Thanks. I dont purchase much on the net myself. Do a lot of shopping on the net but not much purchasing. When possible I like to purchase from walmart because of their tremendous take back policy if the need arises but they dont always have the products I want. Have bought some computer parts online but thats about it and didnt feel real good about doing that. Just like to see before I buy mostly. Im doing some researching on the camera issue for a friend whom is going to buy one this week. I have a rather old kodak I have played with and now im ready to get me a nice camera as well. So after I see what kind of deal we can find him, I will purchase me one as well. Thanks for the suggestion on the nikon brand. Does that camera take short video clips as well? Does the ones that take the short video clips include sound in them? What about memory for the better cameras of 3.1 and higher? Is there differant prefferred memory styles over others? Thanks for any help here.

It does take 15second video clips but no sound. If you purchase a model that takes pics at a higher res the CF "Compact Flash" cards just don't hold as many pictures. My 64Meg card will hold 65 pics when it is set to 2meg(high) and if set to 2meg(normal) it will hold 125pics.

Another model to consider is the Canon A70, it takes video clips and has sound, has a stainless steel body and is fairly compact in size. Additional lens are also available. Unfortunately, I have not seen any camera that provides a decent sized memory card, as they usually only have a 16 or 32 capacity. Memory cards are one item that is worth buying on the net, or at COSTCO. Fuji, Nikon, Olympus and Canon are the best manufacturers in my humble opinion.

This kodak I have I upgraded the memory in it and it has four settings. With it on its lowest res settings it will take over 200 pictures and each setting below decreases the amount of pictures. All the way down to the fourth setting which will hold 24 at that setting. Its been fun playing with it but the quality picture just isnt there. I have saved a lot of money since I purchased this camera a couple of years ago. The wife was breaking me developing film. I dont think she has took any 35 mm pictures since. Just look at how easy it is to burn a zillion pics to a cd and store forever. Thanks again for all the input.

I have had the Olympus Camedia C3000 zoom for two years and I absolutely love it. They probably have a newer one now but mine is 3.34 megapixels and I paid around $600 for it at the time. I bought the Olympus rechargeable batteries with charger and a flash card and reader to go with. I am still recharging the same original batteries after two years so it's been great not to have to buy them every time. That is the one thing I considered when getting mine is making sure it would take rechargeable batteries. I have a 64meg flash card and on a medium setting I can get about 132 pictures. I love to take a lot of macro photos and this camera does very well on that setting plus I have had great luck with the digital zoom. I have an $800 35mm camera body but I use this one much more. Here are some of my photos. Most of the flower stuff is done in macro.

Thanks Mary for your input. Yes rechargeable batteries are a MUST with a digital camera. Break up a rich man not having them. You must be a professional photographer from the looks of your pictures! I will check that camera out as well. Thanks again.

I am just an amature photographer that just loves to photograph flowers. I have loved taking pictures since I was 12 and I am going on 40 but thanks for thinking I am a pro. All those photos were done in automatic mode with no thought so that's how easy it is with a digital. Another thing I did was I bought from a small camera shop in my area. I could have gotten the camera at Circuit city for the same price but at the camera shop I got more personalized attention as to what model would be good for me. I did a good bit of research on the net before going there and was pretty sure on that model Olympus for me and the camera store told me it was a good one. They also had a computer in the store and had some actual photos from that camera so if you find a model you are interested in see if you can find some people that own it and see some sample pictures. That's the reason I like to share is someone did it for me when I was searching. I'm on AOL and we have a fantasitc graphics arts community for digital photography and that helped also. I was told since I am so serious about my photos I should get the best I can afford. Would love to step up to a full size digital with interchangable lenses but we are talking in the thousands for that. Good luck with your decision.
