There are two common interpretations of 'format'
OEM manufacturer's use 'format' to indicate a restore of the system on a PC.
People who are computer literate use 'format' to describe the restoring of a drive to a pristine (no data) condition.

In response to #5 I would have to state that once a hard drive has been formatted it is no longer in a pristine state.
Rather, formatting is the process of preparing the drive to accept the type of OS/files you wish to write/copy to it.
To the original poster, this sounds like a homework assignment. You won't learn anything without doing your own research. Google is your friend.

Well, my comments weren't intended to call you out. I think the OP is gleaning homework assignment answers and I didn't want to supply wrong ones. I didn't give further info for that reason. If actually homework then the OP should do some research.

There are 4 different ways of formatting.
1) The I got my PC wet and now it doesn't work anymore format.
2) The I let my kids use my computer and now must reformat format.
3) The four pound sledge format aka.low level format.
4) The sixteen pound sledge format aka high level format aka the ex-wife format.
Hope these help.
